CHECK-IN QUESTION I am looking for 4 parents to be judges for our Science Fair on April 19. Students will bring their projects in between 12:00-1:00 that day and you will be asking them 3-4 short questions about their projects, then helping me decide who gets selected to go to the district Science Fair. APRIL CLUBS As you can see from the above schedule, we will be pausing clubs in April due to state testing. The only things that will be happening on-site for elementary students will be the state testing sessions and PE. Clubs will resume the week of April 30.
STATE TESTING We will be doing elementary state testing during the month of April here at HOA during our face-to-face class times on Mondays and Tuesdays. If your student is not testing due to homeschool or opt-out, your student will not attend any of the testing sessions, including the practice sessions. If you are interested in finding out more about the SBAC, OAKS Science, or opting out, you can find that info on the district website. Here is the website to the practice tests, practice.smarterbalanced.org. We will be having two practice test sessions on April 2-3 during face-to-face class, but I would recommend sitting down with your student and taking a test with them at home so they will have a good idea of what types of questions will be on the test. Below is the schedule for testing:
April 2-3 Practice test sessions
April 9-10 Science OAKS (Grade 5 only)
April 16-17 English Language Arts (Grades 3-6)
April 23-24 Math (Grades 3-6)
April 30-May 1 Make-up sessions, any test & grades 3-6
OPEN HOUSE/SCIENCE FAIR Thursday, April 19 from 6:30-7:30, will be our annual HOA Science Fair, Talent Show, and Open House in our gym. The Science Fair packet is attached to this email and hard copies went home this week during face-to-face classes. This year, I am allowing students who participate in the Science Fair to pause Science from March 19-April 19. For the first time ever, we will have a food truck on-site the night of the Science Fair! Come grab a delicious dinner and enjoy a fun night at the HOA Talent Show and Science Fair! If you have any friends interested in HOA, please bring them as well. Mrs. Harrington will be available to chat with prospective families and give them info about our programs.
NORTHWEST CHILDREN'S OUTREACH Our Wellness Counselor, Sara Stollberg, has a partnership with Northwest Children's Outreach that helps provide children with basic needs like clothing, diapers, formula, blankets, and toys, just to give a few examples. If your family encounters a need for these items, please feel free to reach out to me or Sara at [email protected] and we will get you connected.
MOBYMAX CONTEST QUARTER THREE Students can earn points in MATH, FACT FLUENCY, and NUMBERS. The last day of the contest is April 12!
TREX RECYCLING CHALLENGE Last year the district collected over 7,000 pounds of plastic, WOW! For the second year, all Hillsboro schools & support buildings are participating in the TREX Film Plastic Recycling Challenge, which runs through April 22, 2018. Students, staff, family, and friends are invited to bring in plastic bags and plastic wrap to a designated bin. Each bag collected will be weighed and recorded monthly until the competition’s end. After the materials are turned in, TREX will transform them into composite lumber, saving the plastic from adding to the landfill or clogging up sorting machines at the recycling center. The winning schools/site—which will be announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2018—will receive a TREX bench. All plastic must be clean, dry, and mostly free of food residue.
MRS. KELLAR'S OFFICE HOURS I am at HOA Monday-Thursday from 8:00-3:00. If you have concerns or questions, please email me and we can set up a time to meet. Pop-ins are generally not encouraged as there is no guarantee that I will be available or at my desk.
