OREGON FOOD BANK FIELD TRIP AND CANNED FOOD DRIVE CONTEST Our fieldtrip to the Oregon Food Bank is tomorrow! Please arrive at HOA by 8:30, we will return to the school by 12:00. Thanks, in advance, to all of the parents who have volunteered to come. I am really excited about this fieldtrip and look forward to the opportunity to serve our community with your students during this time of year. Permission slips are located in the Forms section of my website (www.mrskellar.weebly.com) or your student can pick one up at the school this week or next. I have also included a link to download a copy of their Youth Consent Form that all students need to bring signed tomorrow.

December 15 &16 For our last class meeting we will be having a book exchange! Please bring a new or slightly used, unwrapped book to class that you think someone would be interested in reading. Please avoid books that are too hard for kids your age. Second hand is okay! Go to Goodwill and buy the half price books or Salvation Army on half price day (that’s today!). DON’T spend a lot of money. I will also be picking up a bunch of books in case students forget or can’t bring a book. Every student will go home with a book that is new to them on the last day of face-to-face class before winter break! Please let me know if you have any questions about this.
VOLCANOES In our face-to-face class, we have been studying volcanoes. Next week during our last class before break, we will be writing letters and cards to students in Pahoa, HI who have been displaced because of the lava flow that has been threatening their town. I have been in touch with their principal (who actually invited us on a virtual field trip to watch the lava!!!) to make this happen. I have lots of art supplies here, but if there is anything special that your student would like to bring from home to glue onto a card, you are more than welcome to do that. I am looking forward to seeing your students make personal connections to school in other parts of the world! If your student is unable to attend class next Monday or Tuesday during their regular class day, they can still make a card. Just bring it by the school before next Wednesday and I’ll be sure to include it.
NO SCHOOL DAYS
December 22-January 2 (no face-to-face class as well)
January 19 (no face-to-face class day Monday or Tuesday that week)

Coming up in January…Yes, I went there! January is right around the corner. Our next fieldtrip is January 19, and we’re going to OMSI! Please mark your calendars, I would love to have lots of parent chaperones. Also in January, I will be starting to talk to the students about science fair projects! We will be having our own science fair at Hillsboro Online Academy in April (exact date TBA). Exemplary projects will be chosen to represent our school at the district science fair at Liberty High School on April 30. I will get you the dates as soon as I know them. All HOA elementary students are expected to participate . I will be passing out packets with information and due dates during our Face-to-Face classes in January. Please let me know if you have any questions.
