NEW NEWS***********************************************************
PROJECT SUPPORT There are two projects coming up next week, LA: Envy Story, and Science: Insects. For Envy Story, your student will produce a story with a moral. It can be a made up story, or real life. OW is not specific on length, but I would expect 5-7 well-written sentences for a Meets, and for an Exceeds, several paragraphs with 5-7 well-written sentences each. For Project: Insects, you will need additional resources. If your student would like to choose a different insect than what is on the list, that is fine with me! The grading expectations are the same as the Envy Story for this project. Please let me know if you have any questions. Here are a few good resources:

SUPPORT FROM COUNSELING REFERRAL TEAM We have a fantastic Counseling Referral Team to support you and your student's year at HOA. All requests for support should be directed to the Google Doc link below. Sara Stollberg is our Wellness Counselor and will primarily provide behavioral and emotional support for families, Ken Ollis is our K-12 Academic Counselor, Annette Snyder is our 9-12 Academic Counselor, and Angela Lorenzo, Homeschool Consultant, will be helping families by supporting the at-home environment with a homeschooling lens. Once a request is submitted, either by a parent or teacher, the team will decide who will come alongside and support you.

9:00-9:30 Weekly Optional Class Meeting in Google Classroom
OLD NEWS***********************************************************
NEW SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS For now, we are offering Epic Reading and Typing Club, with MobyMax coming soon! As a family, you can decide upon a schedule that works best for you, or if you have other resources, please don't feel like you have to use these. For my homeroom class, there is no requirement to use these at this time. Please have your student access these resources from the login document I've shared with them on their google drive today.
- EPIC Reading Epic is the leading digital reading platform—built on a collection of 40,000+ popular, high-quality books from 250+ of the world’s best publishers—that safely fuels curiosity and reading confidence for kids 12 and under.
- Typing Club Learning to touch type (use of homerow) is so important to students ability to finish typing assignments more easily/quickly, especially as they get older and have longer assignments. Some students will say they are faster at "hunt and peck" method. Which is true, at first! So, I need your help reminding them to not look at their hands. We are looking for growth over time.
- MobyMax Here! See above for login directions.
DISTRICT MUSIC AND PE Open the link below to find your student's PE and Music classes, housed in Google Classroom! You will need to know which high school feeder your student is in (Glencoe, Hilhi, Liberty, or Century) based on what your neighborhood school would be if you were not at HOA this year, then select the 4-5 grade band. You can start at week 1, or just pick it up where everyone else is at. Also, be sure your pop-up blocker is off. Although it is not required this year, Music and PE are essential for brain and body development and improvement. And, the activities are really fun! Even if you are already involved in music lessons/sports/exercise, these lessons will give you a well-rounded education for both your mind and your body. I know you will really enjoy all of them.
WEEKLY MEETING IN GOOGLE CLASSROOM Our weekly optional class meetings will be on Mondays from 9:00-9:30am. For security reasons, we are not able to email out the meeting link, but ask that students access the class meeting directly from the link on the banner in our Google Classroom, which will be available 5 minutes before the meeting starts. I want to reiterate that this is an optional meeting, and therefore, is not required. Our meetings will be a morning meeting format, where we will discuss any upcoming events or dates, have an Odysseyware tip of the week, and do a short community building activity. If you are planning on having your student attend these meetings, please join our classroom. I won’t be assigning any work there, but it will exist primarily to house our weekly optional class meetings link. You will need your student’s HSD credentials to connect with our classroom, directions are below:
- Go to Classroom.google.com
- Join class (+ in the top right corner)
- Enter code:
- Click: "Join"

Team 3-6 HOA 2020-2021 Facebook Group If you are on Facebook and would like to join our Team 3-6 private group, search for Team 3-6 HOA 2020-2021. Since it is private, it may be more difficult to find. After searching under the group name, you may also need to click on GROUPS. The purpose of this group is to provide another avenue to build community and promote communication. Please let me know if you are unable to find the group and an email invitation will be sent to you.
THURSDAY ODYSSEYWARE EMAIL I will be sending the Thursday Odysseyware Email to parents if their students are behind by at least three lessons in at least one subject. It will be a generic message. If you receive this email, please take a moment to log into OW with your student and work together to come up with a plan to get caught up. If you need support with this, please let me know.
ATTENDANCE Per the Oregon Department of Education, HOA is required to take daily attendance during school days. Things that count for attendance include a student actively working in Odysseyware, a student sending a teacher a message in OW, and an email or any type of communication from a parent to the teacher. As long as one of these things is done each school day, your student will be in attendance.
I hope you all have had a great week!
